Columbia - Koger Center for the Arts - Columbia City Ballet invites audiences to
be captivated by the timeless, magical dream-world of its most joyous holiday gift, William Starrett's enchanting Nutcracker at the Koger Center. The city's most bel oved holiday family tradition, Columbia City Ballet's Nutcracker has it all – a cast
of more than 100, glorious sets and costumes, magical special effects, beautiful music and exceptional dancing by Columbia's most talented professional dancers. "My goal is to create a
Nutcracker experience that guarantees to put you in the holiday spirit," says Starrett, executive and artistic director, who is celebrating his 20th
anniversary directing Columbia City Ballet. "My job as the artistic director is to surpass the standards already set by the previous seasons and keep the production fresh, magical and with
enough new surprises that audiences look forward the returning to the Koger Center to see our Nutcracker."
This season marks the 28th consecutive year that Columbia City Ballet has
presented Nutcracker for Columbia audiences. The sets were commissioned by the Ballet in 1990 from Adirondack Stu dios in New York (which has also done sets for
The Lion King and Radio City Music Hall), and they have the distinction of being the only fully-staged repeating production designed specifically for the Koger Center. Audiences
can expect a few surprises in the production this year, the company's 28th annual staging of Nutcracker. Starrett has added a new opening scene and a new twist to the story of
Clara, the little girl who receives a magical nutcracker on Christmas Eve. The role of Clara will be danced by 13-year-old Nicole
Carrion, at student at Columbia Conservatory of Dance who is dancing the role for the sixth season in a row, and Soloist Kathryn Smoak in the dream sequences.
"Clara was my favorite role growing up," says Smoak, who danced the role for Columbia City Ballet in 1995. "I'm very excited to have the opportunity to re-invent the
role as a more mature dancer. It also helps to add a new twist to Nutcracker, to keep it fresh year after year." Columbia City Ballet will give eight performances of
Nutcracker at the Koger Center. Columbia City Ballet Ticket information and sales: 803-251-2222 www
