San Jose - Ballet San Jose - Ballet San Jose presents its magnificent production
of Dennis Nahat's The Nutcracker December 11 through 26 at San Jose Center for the Performing Arts amid the sparkle of downtown holiday decorations. Tickets for
the blockbuster extravaganza range from $30 to $100 with discounts available for
students, seniors and groups. For many Bay Area families, Nahat's version of the popular ballet is an anchor of their holiday tradition. Ballet San Jose anticipates as
many as 30,000 people will attend the production this December. This is the 25th Anniversary of the production in San Jose and marks 31 years since the piece was
originally created by Cleveland Ballet. This triumphant tale of Maria and her beloved nutcracker will delight audiences, young and old alike;
and downtown San Jose's holiday decorations, Outdoor Ice Rink and "Christmas In The Park" display provide the perfect backdrop for a fun-filled family outing. The
theater itself is a wonderland of surprises, replete with lavish lobby decorations, a boutique of ballet and holiday treasures, choirs singing carols, the "Pocket Lady"
passing out free toys, and characters from the show posing for photos with the children and their families. (Bring your camera. Photos may be taken ONLY outside
the theater.) A Not-To-Be-Missed Treasure of the Season, and a Gift for the Holidays. The History: First choreographed by Dennis Nahat in 1979. (Rehearsals began
in August of that year.) Dennis Nahat's THE NUTCRACKER opened on December 12, 1979 in The Cleveland Public Music Hall. The company had originally announced 18
performances, but wound up doing 21! The production was so popular that patrons ran ads seeking tickets, and scalpers were getting up to $200 per seat!
The original production featured Cynthia Graham as Maria with co-founding director, Ian Horvath as the Nutcracker/Prince. Dennis
Nahat performed the role of Godfather Drosselmeyer. At that time, one cast performed the entire run of performances; today, there are up to six casts performing the
same number of roles. Side Note: During that first season, Nahat performed up to five roles an evening (including Drosselmeyer, the
Grenadier, Spain, Russia and the Waltz and Polonaise.) Dubbed the "all purpose understudy," he knew what roles he would be dancing on any given night by the
costumes hanging in his dressing room. One evening, the wardrobe department crew jokingly hung up one of each costume in Nahat's dressing room… INCLUDING TUTUS!
The first San Jose performances of Nahat's 'NUTCRACKER' were in 1986. Apple Computer founder Steve Wozniak (known as 'The Woz') performed as the
Chestnut Vendor in Act I, scene 1, a role he continued to play for many years. In 1992, Nahat added tiny mice to the production incorporating children from Ballet
San Jose SCHOOL into Act I, scene 3, "A Curious Combat." Now upper level students perform as mice, carolers, soldiers, puppeteers, kings and queens, guards,
pages and "snowflakes"... (from the beautiful, Act I, scene 4, "A Wondrous Snowstorm.")
Music Notes: Much of the score is used in a different order from the original score. In addition to the Nutcracker score, Nahat has choreographed Act II, Scene 1, "The
Great Gates of Castille" to Peter Tchaikovsky's "Capriccio Italian, op. 45." Tchaikovsky's "Polonaise" from the opera "Eugen Onegin, op.
24" has been incorporated into the ballet's final scene, Act II, Scene 6, "At the Grand Ball." The musical changes lengthen the show by about 10 minutes (to just over 2
hours total with intermission) and give Maria one of the longest and most demanding roles of any Nutcracker. The first act is filled with movement, high spirits and humor. This
production's Drosselmeyer is a kindly godfather, giving out gifts to everyone in sight. He is not like the 'spooky' Drosselmeyer of some other versions.
